Hi all wanted to rack your brains. I now you need to shim crank sprocket to align with cam sprocket but the cam sprocket fits closer to the engine and the crank sprocket sits away from the engine if you now what I mean I now its usually the other way round. the gap is really small not much in it. But I notice there's a shim already on the crank but it don't come off what I wanted to know was is this a standard shim which must always be on the end of the crank to stop the crank sprocket from rubbing the crank. I wanted to now if I could remove this shim but it means I would have to cut it off some how as it don't slide off. but this would mean there would be no shim between the crank and sprocket but it would be a perfect fit then or should I machine the crank sprocket.

the cam is fitted fine, engaged into oil pump

triangle is fitter fine and the right way round

its a duplex timing chain and sprockets.

thanks jock.

Check the run out of both sprockets. I had a new (reputable brand) one recently that was out as yours was .. *( crank sprocket sitting further out)  and found it had .006 plus .006 run out as it turned  - outside of spec..... got a new premium timing gear set.... no issues   My friend used a DTI as the sprocket turned to get those figures

You need to remove the woodruff key from the crank nose. Then the shim will slide straight off. The sprocket will work just fine with no shims so long as it is inline with the cam sprocket.

Have you torqued up the cam sprocket nut? If not it may not be seated properly yet.

Also check the end float of the cam, if the cam plate is worn too far the sprocket will appear to sit closer to the block but will also float in and out.
