Hello all,

Just to check after reading lots on the subject with differing opinions.  My 1310 A+ smokes (blue/oil) badly when revved after it has been idling and is hot.  I think this is probably valve guides.  I think I replaced them as I have the MRA tool for setting their depth!  But really can't remember.  I last took my Mini out two kids ago and the oldest is now 3, but I just sent off my application for the CMC Splash Dash (thanks again for organising this year Kaley) so need to get it sorted.

I also found the receipt from the rebuilding of the head from Rob Walker and it mention stripping, cleaning and rebuilding head but not anything about valve guides.  The engine had got 120k miles on it when rebuilt!

The valve seals are all sat tight as far as I can see with just an inspection with a screwdriver through the valve spring.

I think my question is, how important is the valve seat cutting and reaming as I can do everything else myself  (I have a shop press)?

I also need a drivers side black standard arch as mine broke off, can anyone help.

Tracking also needs to be sorted properly after a new rack was fitted and it was tracked by a local tyre place and it managed to eat a brand new tyre in 250 miles, just the passenger one though!

Thanks

Matt

did you replace

the valve stem seals ?

whip the rocker box off

and have a look at the inlet valves

thay should have a top hat seal on them

if not there is your problem

you can change them with out removing the head

tyre eating might be tracking or bent tie rod tells us more

Ok if you fit new guides they have to be reamed to restore valve stem to guide clearance and are reamed to 9/32 or .281 thou then the valve seats will need recutting to suit

So as I expected I will have to just take it into the engineers to get it sorted.

Thanks

Matt - did you fit valve stem seals on the exhaust valves as well as the inlets when you last rebuilt the head?

why ?

have a look to see if the head has valve seals

if not fit them

if you can take a head off you can fit the seals your self

jf you are not shore of what to look for

take a close up pic of 2 inlet valves

and post hear

He's referring to fitting new guides & having the valve seats recut, not fitting stem seals ! lol
