Morning,

I brought a rolling shell about a year ago had all the body work done on it, then brought a metro as a donor car, put the engine in the mini, but as I have not previously had a mini nor did I take an existing engine out, putting the engine in the mini and putting together all the assemblies around it is becoming abit confusing, so any help on the following question would be much appreciated,

I brought this engine steady from mini sport (http://www.minisport...ady-1275cc.html), it says in their catalogue it is for a 1275 carb engine but it does not fit on the top of my thermo housing? does it matter if I use a different housing or is it the wrong steady?

How many engine steady does the engine need or should have?

I also brought the poly quick release engine mounts and when the engine sits in the engine bay, then engine rocks back an forth, is this normal, as I would thought they should be quite firm?

I think that's it for now but as Im sure more question will come up as I go along.

Thanks dan

It's normal for the engine to rock without any engine steadies. The standard ones were fitted from the left side of the engine bay, at the top to the clutch side of the engine; as well as on the bottom, from the front of the subframe to the gearbox.

Where from the gearbox? I brought that steady and I cant see where the bracket attaches to the gearbox?

The top one (assuming you have the standard one) should go here: DSCN0308.jpgI don't see why your minisport one won't fit. Maybe a picture would help.

The bottom one is quite hidden. Can't find a picture but if you feel behind the front section of the subframe, you may be able to find the mounting.

And will try and get a picture.

This is the bracket for the engine steady with the housing....

2014-01-05%2012.31.45.jpg

so this is the what I mean about the steady that's attached to the top of the thermostat housing not sitting right

And also when it sat in the supposed position the steady bar is not straight is this normal?

And with regards to the gearbox steady, this is the kit

And this is the hoop on the subframe

And the gearbox

Any ideas where what fits where would be a great help?

Ok, I haven't used these types of engine steadies, but lets see how it goes.

In the case of the top engine steady, I think it was designed for minis that don't have the sandwich plate on the thermostat housing that you do. I believe the top piece with the radiator hose is of a slightly different design so the bracket would sit flat. So it's a combination of these factors which has resulted in the height problem on the bulkhead side. My suggestion would be to get a different one or make up some spacers to get the correct height. Again, are you using the original steady like in the picture I put up. Once again, I'm not an expert, but I think it may be necessary.

The bottom steady you have looks like it goes from the radiator side of the gearbox to the subframe leg towards the back of the car (the bit that goes to the heel board) You may be able to use the existing bolts in the gearbox casing. (not sure if longer bolts are necessary). A few holes will probably need to be drilled for the subframe bracket if not already there
