Hi, just rebuilt the rear drum brakes on my '96 spi. So nice to have a handbrake. You should of saw the state of them - Been leaking for a while me thinks. Anyway, just a Q question regarding the bleed nipple.

The cylinder bleed nipple is still showing about half of the thread out the back of the backplate... Is that normal? Don't want to over tighten it

Thanks

Just did mine at the weekend. I would say it is normal to have some threads showing.

They don't normally screw all the way in, as long as its snugly done up, you will feel a definite stop. Check you have no leaks from it then it should be fine.

Thanks chaps. Yeah it's done up nice and doesn't leak. Just looks wrong as you'd expect it to go all the way in. Saying that though, even the brake pipe shows a bit of thread. Must just be how they are

Hi, This is normal. Longer male nuts are used on the brake pipes as short male unions do not have enough thread. If you still have the rubber bung that was in the cylinder hole, pop this over the end of the bleed nipple and pop a bit of grease around the nipple too. Helps stop premature seizing and the bleed nipple hole getting muck in it.

The nipple and brake pipe MUST show some thread, as otherwise it would be impossible to know that they were tight. In both cases it is the conical end that makes the seal in the coned end of the bore, and if the hexagon was bottoming out against the cylinder body, that would not happen and they would leak.

The only hydraulic fitting in a Mini that should, indeed must, not be showing thread is the banjo bolt on the front right brake hose, because that is sealing by clamping between flat copper washers.
