Right, the synchromesh is on the way out on my jack Knight five speed. I am sure i could live with it for a bit longer but it is lessening the driving enjoyment which is starting to annoy me a bit.My questions are, is it even possible to get this sorted with it being a Jack knight?? Can anybody recommend somewhere if it is plausible to get sorted?? If it going to cost a ridiculous amount of money can someone recommend a good place to sort a 4  box with appropriate final ratio for a cooper s works please?? Thanks in advance

Hi,

We can help you. It is impossible to price the job though as until the gearbox is apart we do not know what problems it has. The 2nd gear synchro is not a problem to solve but these gearboxes suffer from a variety of other issues which until its apart and inspected will not be apparent.

These issues can include selector problems, mainshaft pitting, 5th reverse laygear pitting and a lot of the parts are not available any more. We do have some parts for these as old stock and some things can be engineered, but its a how long is a piece of string type question. We suggest getting the box to us for stripping and inspection and go from there. Our workshop manager is ex Jack Knight and is an expert on these boxes.

Cheers Scott

Thanks for your reply, ideally looking for somewhere a bit closer to Lincolnshire but I will keep you in mind.

This is the trouble with Jack Knight boxes, while they work they're fine, when they fail they get expensive...

If it's just a baulkring then it should not be a problem, but if there's any bespoke items which there are numerous in the JKD boxes, then it's hope and Pray that NOS parts are obtainable...

I know of people how have spent many hundreds getting gears made because of unavailability.

It's all the symptoms of synchro mesh, the fifth gear is fine, don't mind spending some money but also if it's gonna take time I don't want the car off the road too long so maybe a four speed while it gets looked at, I spend about seven months offshore so can afford a bit of time to get it looked at though closer to Grantham the better from a logistics point of view. I would like to keep it original but also I am not convinced the jack knight is best suited to the driving characteristics of the s works, do you have alternative suggestions?? You are quite close to me which is handy.
