Some one on here must be able to so it cheaper than that surely.

They charge stupid prices there. I've always just used standard punches and done it myself and it looks fine.

Ah, but that's the difference between a proper engine number and a knock-off one.
Anyone can hammer letters and numbers into a bit of metal - I've got three sets of stamps in different sizes for marking things.
The proper one is reverse stamped - the digits are raised not sunken - and totally different to what can be done at home.
As I understand it, you need a licence to have the reverse stamps in the correct typeface for VIN plates, you certainly have to see a copy of the V5C and inform the DVLA when a plate is made up, just like with number plates.
Not sure where you got £24 from, the price list is £13.33 for supply of plate with number stamped and the rivets to fix it on - £16 if that needs VAT adding.
A friend of mine had a home-made VIN plate on his slam panel, and the MoT tester got very agitated about it. Luckily he got away with it, but only after the tester checked that the VIN number wasn't registered as stolen.
