I have recently bought a 93 Mayfair with 1275 engine and feel the need for more power.

I have read the forum threads and get ever more confused. My previous experience is with Ford.

Some questions to help me get my head around what fits what:

1. I presume mine is an A+ engine, does that have the water by pass and heater take off?

2. Are 9 stud and 11 stud interchangeable and what would an A+ normally have?

3. I have chance of an MG Metro head. Would this be a straight swap on an A+ and would it be a worthwhile upgrade for normal road use?

Many Thanks...............

If A+ it should have a verto clutch (short arm) among other features.

If you have a 9 stud head, you don't need to worry about 11 stud heads, they have 2 extra holes drilled in them.

I wouldn't change to the MG head unless you know it has bigger valves on it. Depending on what you get, you may want a different carb or needle at the very least.

Again, has it got a stage 1 kit? This would be the first area to work on.

Also, make sure it is tuned well to make the most of what you've got.

Cheers.

Plan was to put a Stage one kit on with 1.75 Su and follow that with a head, but the Metro head has just popped up.

It already has an LCB but it is small bore, and is currently on a 1.5SU.

I wondered if the Metro head was worthwhile as doing the Stage one and head together would save getting it set up twice.

If it is the head with the 35.6 mm inlet valves and the 29.5 mm ex. valves then it is a very good head.

Before fitting any different head it is important to measure and calculate the compression ratio then machine the head to provide the C.R. you want.
