i got my 1380 installed last thursday and everything seemed fine in the first 2 days. was trying to run the engine in and did about 50 miles or so, however, on saturday night the car became undrivable.
when i start accelerating in first gear everthing goes fine until about 30 seconds of driving when i hit about 3000 revs in third gear, then all of a sudden the engine just dies and doesn't accelerate any more. i have to keep dropping gears until i come to a stop. if i leave the car at idle for another minute or so the engine seems to recooperate and i can drive it for another 30 seconds or so until it dies on me again. has anyone got any idea what it could be?

it seemed to work fine before the rebuild. are the standard fuel pumps ever too weak for a 1380?

Are you using a mech fuel pump? if you are i would suggest you use an electric one. I am no expert but i have had trouble with using a mech fuel pump on my 1330.

Deffo sounds like fuel starvation, pump fills float bowl with fuel at idle, engine consumes fuel faster than the pump can supply when under load, float bowl empties and engine starts to hesitate.
Id check the pump is working correctly first, is there fuel in the oil??
Probibly easier to change the pump for a new one ( Not Used) and see if its any different
Depending on tune of the 1380 the mech pump may well be inadequate, an electric pump will be required.

its a MSPD 1380. MSPD stage 3 head. SW5 cam. HIF44 carb. stage 2 maniflow, etc, etc. would it be worth me buying a facet red fuel pump? how hard are they to fit?

A mechanical pump will be fine on that spec engine, jus tget a new or good used one and replace yours. I ran a mech pump with no probs on my 1380 and it was a higherr spec than that.

supermotolee i cant really comment because i was running the engine in so couldnt tell how powerful it was, also bearing in mind that the car hasn't been tuned on a RR.
i've booked the car in at the garage around the corner, i hope they dont do me over and charge me a crazy price.

It's fuel.
I use mechanical fuel pumps with no reported probs yet.
