The consensus is a good quality 20w50 such as Millers, Valvoline VR1 or Comma Sonic
Halfords Classic and Comma Classic (same oil) are ok if you can't stretch to the cost of the others
Edit: Unless its an Auto, in which case its 10w40

as above, 20w50 I use Halfords Classics, find it seems to like it
Although sometimes Rover / BL recommended thinner stuff, but the gearbox just whips this up and so doesn't really lubricate the box properly. So yea, unless its an auto, 20W50 for all minis. :)

Yes, 20W50, NON-SYNTHETIC (and therefore usually cheaper!). The proper Millers oil specifically for Minis is best, as it has the necessary additives to keep both engine and gearbox happy, whereas a modern synthetic or semi-synthetic may be good for the engine but damaging to the gearbox.
