Top Dash Nut Size..

Best Answer tiger99 , 22 January 2014 - 03:01 PM

Sady, there may be a problem here, but with a little explanation it will go away for ever, as far as participants in this thread are concerned at least.

When you ask for a nut, the first thing to specify is the diameter and thread, which is 1/4" UNF. Then it is most likely a half nut (but most are, so commonly not specified, cylinder head nuts etc are full nuts), and there is also the grade, which everywhere on a Mini, except a few engine internals, is ISO grade 8, to match an 8.8 bolt, but not too important in this particular case.

If you ask for a 7/16" nut, you may have difficulty getting one, as it is not a very common size, and is a monster, hardly appropriate for a dash rail.

Now this is where the future comes in, and you will never need to ask again, once you know. A 1/4" UNF or UNC bolt needs a 7/16" AF (across flats) spanner, the very common 5/16 needs a 1/2" AF, and the 3/8" needs a 9/16" spanner, which covers the vast majority of bolts on a Mini, and other British cars of that era, except those with reduced hexagon size on very late models, or Metros, which .I suspect may be metric. On the Mini, almost all have UNF threads, except certain engine and transmission bolts and studs, which screw into fairly soft castings and have UNC threads on one end.
