Question:

Should I machine off the casting for the breather on the transfer case to make it look like a 3 synchro transfer case or leave it on.

Leave it on - keeps originality of parts

Take it off - a mk1 should not have a 4 synchro box or transfer case and 3 synchro cases never had the casting for the breather

Some additional information to read before you decide....

I have a 1967 mk1 cooper s REPLICA.

I wanted a cooper s but could not find one when I was looking regardless of price so when offered a mk1 super deluxe for free, I took it and started replicating.

The car is built to standard cooper s spec with the exception of a few st/comp bits like hilos, neg arms, tie rods, 4.5J minilifes etc. I also converted the car to dry for reliability.

The car came with a 998 which I cleaned up and put back in as I hoped to finish it in time for my wedding but failed, so now the wedding is done and bank balance has recovered I decided to build up the 1275 s engine I had for it. Decided to put an 1128 s box in it which is the correct spec for a late mk2 & 3. It also has the 940 1805 head like late mk2 and mk3.

So bearing in mind a mk1 should only have a 3 synchro box and transfer case, should I make my 4 synchro transfer case (22g1021) look more like a 3 synchro one?

Can easily machine it off if required.

Thanks Dave

Without diving into the cold dark shed or garage to inspect a transfer case, I'm not 100% convinced you will be able to machine off the cast lump from a 998 casing without breaking through into the baffle underneath and opening the hole up.

Beautiful car, stellar work, great presence!

The feature you are asking about is obscured by so many other things in the engine bay I would not touch it.

I would leave it. Many cars of that age will have had replacement parts fitted over the years and it is really a 'period mod', as is a 4-syncro gearbox.

Your car looks super - very well done. You should be rightly proud of it.

i'd leave it, as cooperman says it would class as a period mod
