I have noticed a squeaking on my mini recently. basically if im going in a straight line it can be heard slightly, turn left it gets louder and appears more frequent, turn right it stops altogether. The car drives fine and brakes normally and doesn't pull. anyone any ideas what it could be or what I can look at. its a 79 with 8.4 discs. it sounds like the front but unsure what side

wheel bearing? have you jacked it up and checked for play in the wheel?

Does it stop when you are in a straight line and apply the brake pedal? If so then it could be play in the wheel bearing. Noise could be from the disc wobbling slightly and chafing on the brake pads. Check for play in the wheel bearings. Also check for brake disc run out.

It does sound like a wheel bearing due to the way it changes when loads change.

This really needs investigated before using the car any more!

Yep looked at it this morning. Not wheel bearing as no play on either side. How do I check disc run out?

Use DIal gauge also know as DTI (dial test indicator). Run out should be less than 4 thou (0.1mm) ideally. Are you sue there is no play in wheel bearing? Double check it.

Yes I'm sure my dad had a look as well. Surely if the disc wasn't true I would get brake judder through the pedal which it hasn't?

Could this be a worn knuckle joint? The classic Mini Creak.

I will check that as I'm fitting new cones this week and have new knuckles to go in while I'm there. They are relatively new but with the quality of some parts these days any things possible

And would this go with the speed of the car. I would have thought bumpy roads but it's there where it feels flat. When I had one go before on another car it was only there on largeish bumps

Tricky to diagnose. When the knuckle has worn through the nylon cup completely then it is obvious, bouncing he car on the suspension usually reproduces the noise. When the joint is just dry, due to lack of grease it only seems to happen on the road and then not all the time. If you are going to replace them any way then why not ease off the rubber boot and check for dryness? Hope you get it sorted.

Bouncing the car isn't going to be possible. I converted it to the coil spring replacement and they have fully compressed after just a couple thousand miles. Really not happy with them. Surely that shouldn't happen. Will report back when I complete the work
