So my question is can Koni shocks be rebuilt?

I will need shocks for mine sooner or later and I see used MPI Koni shocks popping up on Ebay frequently but if I cannot get the rebuild kits or they are a nightmare to rebuild then I will have to splash the cash and buy new.  :ohno:

So can they be rebuilt?

If so where can I buy the kits?

Cheers

Jason

I don't think they can be rebuilt, at least I have never seen any claim that they could, and I have used Konis on several cars over the years. They really do last about 5 times as long as Woodhead Monroes, the cheap, nasty brand used by several car manufacturers in the 1970s, and probably even now, but they wear out eventually, like anything with moving parts.

Actually, very few brands of damper can be rebuilt, most are sealed, for example by swaging or crimping the end.

Edit: I have found a rebuildable Koni damper, but you did say it was for a Mini, not a train:

Another edit: Some AVO and Bilstein dampers are rebuildable, but these are not brands which seem to be commonly used on Minis.

Yet another edit: Protech too.

I have some Koni coilovers on another car and they look like you can unscrew the top cap and rebuild.

New Koni shocks are expensive so if buying used ones and rebuilding could save a lot of money if I can get kits. I have had a good look on the web for rebuild kits but with no success. I have the time as I do not need them yet but its not looking good :(

If the cap unscrews, in theory they are rebuildable, but probably only by Koni themselves, as I can't see any spares anywhwere. That is not entirely surprising. It is likely to be just for "commercial" reasons like maximising profit, but there is some sense in requiring rebuilt dampers to be properly tested and calibrated on a rig which only the manufacturer will have.
