Just stripped my engine and box from my 1963 Mini Minor. I had bought a diaphragm clutch kit but now realize its the early coil spring type. >_<  Where can I get a kit to replace this clutch, assuming the diaphragm kit is unsuitable?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there is a conventional kit available. The springs are valve springs, and I think the driven plate is the same as for the diaphragm. I'm not certain about the release bearing.

It must be over 40 years since I last worked on a coil-spring clutch, but from memory the diaphragm clutch is interchangeable. If it isn't, then you just need a flywheel for an early car, 1964 onwards I believe. I'm sure the thrust bearings are identical.

I seem to remember making a competition coil spring clutch for an early 997 Cooper using heavier than standard valve springs, or did I imagine that?

According to Minispares the older type is NLA and suggest fitting a different flywheel.

Will any pre verto flywheel fit?, ie will a 998 flywheel fit 850 crankshaft (might be a 998 one somewhere about home)

Will the same clutch cover (bell housing) fit?, it is a different release bearing, diaphragm one is thicker than the existing one.

The only cranks a later flywheel won't fit are the very early thin-tail 850 cranks with the oil-fed primary gear. Not many of those left now.

I think the release bearing is the same, but for a few quid I guess you would fit a new one anyway. The clutch covers are all interchangeable.

Having got myself a diaphragm flywheel and as I went to fit it today I discovered that yes, I have one of the thin tail cranks! so it would seem Im sticking with the coil spring type. I'm not going to go to the bother of changing the crank!
