One of my radius arms has the normal thread that tightens clockwise but the other side seems from what I can see to be anti clockwise. Is this normal? And does anyone know which nut is the correct on with the reverse thread?

Cheers se

I assume you are referring to the stub axle?

The left side of the car has a left hand thread and visa versa.

Correct, as it was considered to be safer, because if the split pin failed, the tendency would be for the nut to tighten, not loosen. However, it is now known that the original theory was nonsense, because vibration would tend to loosen the nut regardless of the miniscule frictional torque applied via the bearings, so a number of cars which originally had left and right handed hub nuts now only have spares supplied with a standard right hand thread.

It appears that Mini stub axles are still supplied in left and right hand versions.

Make sure your torque wrench clicks in the "opposite" undo direction...!

Good point! Fortunately many of them are reversible nowadays, the square drive shaft just pushing through to the opposite side, but some are not. I got quite a decent one in Halfords a few years back, in fact I got two, a big one and a smaller one, both reversible.

Yep, me too, I think I bought the Halfords Advanced one just for this job as my draper one did not click other way and did not reach the torque - or that may have been for the fronts. The Halfords one is great though with the push through drive.

On the Rolls-Royce my wife used to own even the wheel nuts had opposite threads on one side to the other. I spent ages trying to undo the wheel nuts on one side before I realised! Unnecessary complication for no good reason.
