Having fixed the problem with my '67 I've turned my attention to the '61project! It came with a later oval binnacle and sender but I have replaced the speedo with a more suitable early silver face speedo and fuel gauge. This doesn't read right, presumably due to the lack of a voltage stabiliser. I have a spare gauge that I can swap the silver face front on to but how do I wire in a voltage stabiliser? It has a brand new early mk1 loom.

Not sure if it was the same with the early Mini's, but the pre 64 Morris 1000's had the resistance in the opposite direction. i.e. full voltage from the sender was empty on early and full on late cars. And visa versa, of course. The only ways round this are finding an early sender (no longer manufactured) or modifying a late one.
I'm sure someone will confirm whether it's the same for Mini's or otherwise!
Obviously, if you are using the later gubbins (tech term!) then this wouldn't be an issue anyway.

Quick bump in the hope that DK Lawson has the answer for this one too!

If you need a voltage stabilizer, see the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual. It takes its feed from the white (ignition controlled) circuit, and if you wish you can fit an in-line fuse, It also needs an earth, piggy-backed onto any black earth wite behind the dash, and the outgoing terminal feeds the gauges.

Sorted! Swapped the faces of the gauges - they can be prised apart and then "recrimped", mounted the stabiliser on the back of the speedo with an earth wire and took the green live feed from the old gauge to the stabiliser and a light green back to the gauge. Works properly now - after I remembered to reconnect the sender.
