Indicator And Hazards Not Working

Best Answer lisamini , 09 February 2014 - 03:14 PM

Sorted!

I tried to link the two wires as suggested by 'crazy about minis' with wire on the hazard switch but the flasher unit still buzzed.

Not knowing what else to do I fiddled with the plug that connects to the flasher unit, it now works turns out it was a loose connection going into the plug that goes into the flasher unit, sorted!! and cost me nothing.

Thanks again everyone!

I've got problems with my indicator and hazard lights.

When I turn on the indicators or press the hazard switch the flasher unit makes a buzzing noise and the indicators do not come on at all, the dash lights don't light up either.

I have replaced the flasher unit with a new one and it does exactly the same, checked all fuses including in-line fuses removing each one and checking with a multimeter and checked all the bulbs and they are fine, there isn't any moisture in the connections.

Could it be a faulty hazard switch?

Or does anyone have any ideas of what to look at next?

Any help much appreciated,

Thanks Lisa

A penny for all the time.

It's the hazard switch.

Well, yes, I agree that the problems are usually due to the hazard switch, which is notoriously unreliable, but a buzzing flasher unit is almost always an indication of severe overload caused by a short to earth, so this time it may be different. It could theoretically be a more complex than usual internal fault in the hazard switch, shorting both left and right circuits to earth, or something .else

Now we are looking for a fault which affects both left and right indicator circuits, and the hazard circuit, and I don't know of any single point in the system where one fault would do that. So, the first question that I ask is, how did this arise? Was it following maintenance, and what was done, even things seemingly well away from the indicators? Or did it just happen suddenly in normal driving?

One possible test is to remove the hazard switch, temporarily link the two light green/brown (one may be light green/white, my diagram is not clear) wires together, and see if the indicators now work normally. If so, it was indeed the hazard switch.

Well, maybe, but it will be at least a double fault in the switch for this particular symptom, which makes it much less probable than if the indicators just didn't work, which requires only a single fault.

Hello

'Crazy About Mini's' the fault arose suddenly I hadn't done anything to the car but it hadn't been driven for a month, I started it up tested all the lights and that's when I noticed it, everything else works fine.

I will have a look and see if I can link the wires together as you suggested tomorrow hopefully its just the hazard switch.

Thanks everyone for the help! Will let you know if I solve the problem.

Lisa

I am known as "tiger99" by the way. "Crazy About Minis" is the status awarded me based on counting my posts, just as you are known as "lisamini" and your status, for now, is "Just On Tickover", so I would refer to you as "lisamini" while you should refer to me as "tiger99".

And, welcome to the forum. I hope we (all the regulars here) will be of considerable help to you and your Mini in the future.
