When you say A40 I assume you mean the late Farina model and not the very different ones from right after WWII.  Regardless, the HIF carb would not have been standard on the A40 as they went out of production in the late 1960s if Wikipedia is correct.

While the late A40s used A-series engines, the displacements indicate these were inline engines, not transverse.  Therefore, any carb you get off the A40 could be made to work on the Mini but you will need a Mini specific intake manifold, not the manifold from the A40.

Depending on which engine was in the A40 you may have to change the carb needle to get the HIF carb to work with your setup.

A40 would have had a 1 1/4" SU not a HIF. Early 948cc A40's had a downdraft Zenith carb.

HIF38 is roughly a 1 1/2" carb so should work with correct needle and spring.

We already have a HiF44 fitted so would it not just bolt onto that manifold? Thanks
