Hi all,

while i'm waiting for the weather to get dry ( damn rain here)

Im installing my rev counter, so when I get the mini to run I see the revs when running in the new camshaft.

( For the people intrested, mini will stat, was due to being way to lean :P )

The smiths rev gauge has 3 connections :

- '-VE'

- '+VE'

- 'Trigger'

I connected :

 '-VE' to the body

' +VE' to a posetive terminal

'Trigger' to the negative side of the coil.

Now when I crank the engine on starter motor I don't see any revs, is this normal?

Really need to be sure this is connected right etc, dont want to destroy the camshaft :P

grtz!

hi.... do you have the right rev counter for your car, if you have electronic ignition do you have rvc + numbers on the bottom of the face of the gauge, or rvi if you have points?

cheers james

Pretty much the same as what I have. It is the correct type and your wiring is correct at the tacho end, you might just want to check the +12v to ensure you have it. So your engine is in and everything is wired up and ready to run? What have you not got (air, fuel, spark) to make sure it doesn't start? Just cranking the engine is only low rpm (probably less than 100rpm) so probably won't register.

You said you have V+ connected to "a positive terminal".  Where?

If you have ballast ignition system this V+ connection cannot be at the coil.  Use a switched terminal on the fuse box instead to supply the tachometer with full system voltage.

I assume you mean that your car has the pre-engaged starter motor with the piggy-back solenoid and that you have connected the tach's power supply to the starter motor terminal where all the brown wires are located.  Any other terminal on the starter motor is not going to work for you.  If you have an inertia starter motor, connecting the tach power input wire to it won't work at all.

Yep, have that starter motor with the little 'box' attahed ( 91' mini)

And indeed at the terminal with the brown wires..

I'm confused..... Lol.... I thought rvc was for electronic ignition and Rvi was for points ignition? If I'm right then your rev counter isn't right for your car if it has points going off the letters on the bottom of the face of your rev counter

Cheers James
