A friend of mine has just started getting nose bleeds

not the normal 5 min one's , but 4 hour ones & losing a lot of blood , once every day for the last 4 days

& one in the night - which meant she swallowed a lot of blood - so stomach ache as well

Doctor sends to A&E - A&E needs the bed after 6 or so hours so send her home with no advise - happened twice now

she is now feeling very drained & we are worried about her as she must be anemic by now

she has just had blood tests - and will get the results soon - the blood clots - but takes a lot of time

we think it is a vein damaged in her sinus & blood pressure is raised as a result of seeing the blood

ironically told by hospital , any nose bleed over 30 mins & you should go to hospital ?

- yet when she goes , they send her home with no advise what to do

we've used Ice on the nose & this stops it for a while , also holding head forward pinching the bridge of nose

but does anyone else have any tips for stopping it ?

Sounds like it could be the membrane in the nose either damaged or caused by infection which the gp could cauterise to stop it - surprised neither the gp or A&E havent sorted it , definitely shouldnt bleed for hours! Does she have temp?

I would get her to go to her doctors of which they can investigate further and send to right departments for proper investigation. Nose bleeds such as hers can be caused by many things...high blood pressure, burst vessels, infection and if she is on any medication what may cause her blood to thin slightly or stop it clotting her blood correctly. If it carries on daily like it has been, she could become anaemic.

thanks for the reply's

no temp that I know of

anon - tried blocking it - blood just runs down back of throat

SSugar - thanks

problem is everyone seems busy at the moment Doc & A&E - think it's time they made a bigger fuss about it

A&E has to clear beds every so often - so they can be green ? (does that make sense , that's what her hubby said)

I used to get random nose bleeds (still do occasionally 31 now!) I have inflamed blood vessels(?) inside my nose which seem to burst every now and then - but it's never lasted for that long - problem is that when you pinch your nose you don't really stop the bleeding!

There is a medical solution which is to scrape the inside of yer nostrils! I guess it's not the same thing tho if the doc can't see it... pain in the rs they are

Chemical cauterization sucks.  Had it done several times for same reason.  Hope it works for her.

I get the impression no one wanted to do it

It don't sound serious - till you realise how much blood she was losing

thanks for the comments - & no nose bleeds yet - touch wood

I get nose bleeds from time to time (worst one being at a car show in the summer). Mine tend to happen in hot weather but don't last longer than 15-20 mins. Still a pain in the arse when your out and about or wearing your favourite clothes lol. I don't think I've ever been to the Dr's about them.

i get em similar to tis too, seems to be when the weather is changing, i can usually tell if theres going to be a few rainy days or a few decent sunny days because i'l get nose bleeds 3 or 4 days before it happens! guess its to do with the pressure

my mother used to get nose bleeds that lasted for hours, that turned out to be blood pressure i think!
