So basically i've been watching a few of the events in the winter olympics and loved watching the snowboarding, I've always fancied having a go.

Apparently there's a place near me that does it, just wondered if anyone has ever had a go ? & is it worth looking into ? :D

Snowboarding is great fun. I've never had the pleasure of trying skiing, but from what friends have told me, when you've been for a few sessions, it is more fun.

The only advice I'd give you, is that if you're learning, wear wrist guards, a back protector and stuff a pillow in your pants. You fall on your arse... a lot...

It is good fun, but I still prefer skiing (I think its mainly because you get to go faster for less skill). The only thing with snowboarding is that its a steep learning curve. Stand up, fall down, repeat for a few days. With skiing you can be going in a few minutes (admittedly snowploughing) so is more fun that way. Both are great though and worth a try.

I've been away skiing and boarding a few times and love it. If you head to Canada in the winter it can easily drop 6 inches of powder overnight and none of that european slush either

Manchester Snowfactore....thats your nearest 'proper' snow place.  There is a dry slope in Kidsgrove too.

Snowboarding - hard to learn, easy to master

Skiing - easy to learn, hard to master

I've been skiing since I was 3, it's so much fun!! You gotta do it, skiing or snowboarding!!

i've been wanting to learn how to snowboard for ages but keep putting it off! my friend thought himself and said he might give me a hand. or is snowboarding something better learned from instructors and proper lessons? rather than trial and error?

I love snowboarding :)

Fantastic fun, first time I went I did the snowboard school after a day of attempting it on my own! lol

Didn't do too badly considering!

I would definitely recommend doing a school or something... you get to meet some great people plus you don't feel too bad about sucking! And definitely recommend wrist protectors and a foam pad or protector for your lower back and good snowboard trousers!

But I love it and even though I've just been to Val Thorens, I cant wait to go again next year!

Another snowboarder here. Not been doing it as long as some folk, a lot of my friends have been going for years and when I was given the chance to start up, I thought I was going to hold my friends up when I went on holiday with them.

I used to skateboard loads, so i had fairly good balance already (if i say so myself) I got myself some lessons on Groupon, rammed full of bargin hunters on the 1st lesson, it was slow going and all I wanted to do was progress. come the final lesson I was confident enough to zip down the indoor slope on my own.

But that said, its completly different on the side of a mountain, you have more chance to involve yourself in and have fun and once you get into it, its much easier to progress.

Certainly agree with the wrist gaurds, I've taken some mean tumbles which im sure would have wiped out my wrists had I not been wearing them, especially when you end up plunging them into powder.

Best fun has gotta be popping off piste onto a fresh bit of powder the morning after a downfall, especially if you manage to grab some air :D

If you really get into it, some of the indoor places hold freestyle nights where you can try out jumps and rails... there's always a 10 year old whos doing huge grabs over and down a kinked rail, but it still feels awesome to try some new stuff out for yourself.

My last holiday was in Tignes, fantastic resort and huge veriaty in runs it does lacks tree lines (another fav of mine and the group I go with)  got some fairly good GoPro footage, but editing has been put off too easily!

Previous year I went to Avoriaz, which was just stunning, great runs, a couple of excellent snow parks, catering for a mix in capability across the mountain.

do it. great fun. ive heard lots of times "i used to be good on a skateboard so snowboarding will be easy"  are they that similar? dosn't look that way when they are face down in the snow.   3 valleys takes some beating...
