Been stripping down my mini in preperation to replace both sills and a strip of the floor panel using a heritage repair panel. At the same time i took the opportunity to completely strip the underside of the car so i could derust and give it a more protective coat to prevent it rusting again too badly.

The car wont be on the road for more than 3-5 years as i want to turn this shell into a racer (hillclimber), but dont want to have to re-do all this work at the point i convert it, so need a bit of advice when it comes to painting it.

A friend has given me a good technique to paint the shell, im only doing the underside at the moment, but im a little unsure on what paint to use. I hear good things about POR15, but i dont know which one to use as there are a LOT and not really definative descriptions. POR15 products:

Tri-coat primer
Rust preventative paint
Chasis black
Black coat (already have)
Self etching primer
Metal ready (already have)
Solvent

I've got the metal ready which i've already used on the a-post repairs which seems to have worked well, but im not sure what i should be using on the floor? The initial plan was to (after replacement panels were fitted) strip, wash down with spirits, apply metal ready, then probably tri-coat primer and finally chasis black? Or should i be using rust preventative paint? Or somthing completely different?

As you've guessed im a complete noob when it comes to paint, so some suggestions would be appriciated. Im also concidering just using any old high zinc content primer and some stone chip as it wont be on for long or do very much work.

Pic shows the shell in current state, still needing further stripping and repair panels to be fitted.

my suggestion would be some sort of stone shield/underbody paint. I'm sure someone pointed out a "cheap" version of the Wurth bodyschutz paint in the paint/detailing forum. Have a search on there.

Basically it's slightly flexible to it wont chip off and it has a high "wax" content so it protects the underside from rusting (well, as much as possible anyway!). Kind of underseal properties without being a horrible gloopy mess. :w00t:

Chassis paint would do the job, but I think the above "schutz" (protectant in German) would be better.

I have no idea if I'm doing it right either but this is what i'm doing on my estate... I'm re undersealing all but the outer sills (trying to get a nice smooth finish :w00t:) then on the outer sills I'm using Stone Chip paint, got Waxoyl in it so is rust preventative and gives a neat finish ready to prime over then body colour topcoat.

stone chip. Comes in cans much like the schutz and is spayed on with the gun and a compressor.

Dont use Wx oil or tetra schutz, these are bitumen based and cannot be painted over, stone chip can.

Stone chip also comes in `three colours to start if you are not going to paint, White, black, grey. Lucky for me my car is white so I wont be painting the underside

Don't know, but I used that hammerite/waxoyl underbody sealant paint stuff about 7 years ago and my floors are still in good shape. :w00t:

I wasn't bothered that they were black and my cars red as I rarely see the underside.

But I'd use the stone chip stuff on the outer sills so you can then paint your body colour over it and then fill the inner sills/box-sections with waxoyl stuff.
