Indicators Problem

Best Answer Hen1275 , 24 February 2014 - 08:56 PM

The problem was the flasher unit under the dashboard. So I swapped it for the circular one in the engine bay and they work perfectly now. It's only temporary until I sort them out properly with the correct units for each.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hi, I have a 1990 rover mini cooper which I bought a couple months ago. My indicators have been working, but not as they should e.g. they would flash twice really quickly then it would be a couple of seconds until they flashed again, then flash quickly again a couple of times, and so on.. But this morning they weren't working at all. And with regards to the hazards they have never worked for me since I've had the car, so I don't know if this has something to do with the problem.

Any advice on how I can fix this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Check the fuse in the inline fuse holder behind the carb (if you have one)

I expect that you have a faulty hazzard switch (common problem) try another hazz switch / easy fix!

If they were flashing erratic before the fail, check the flasher unit, which I believe on the later cars is below the dash r/h side, earlier cars had both on the bulkhead under bonnet on the n/s

Flasher Relays are always a common fault, for the sake of £5 from ebay its worth replacing.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I'll check the fuse when I get the car back tomorrow as its having some welding do at the moment, and if its not that then I'll get a new flasher relay.

And I'll swap the hazard switch with one that works and see if that makes a difference.

Get out & check the indicators light when it plays up. It may be an intermittent earth or broken filament. The flasher unit starts on & flashes off at a rate according to the amount of current, which depends on the resistance of the bulbs.

I'd suspect the hazard flasher first, for the hazard fault, just bridge its terminals and see if you get unflashing hazards.

Just been looking at relays. Will any 12v 2 pin relay work or does it have to be for a mini?

They are flasher units really, later cars have proper relays in the indicator circuit, so it saves confusion.

They are a universal bit, but they do need to match your bulb configuration because of that resistance thingy. You want 2x21watts unless you have side repeaters, then it'd be 2x21 + 5watts

As Ether said they are Flasher Units with no primary windings inside just the Bi-Mettalic strip which is heat operated by the current draw, test the feed into the flasher unit with ignition on, 12v in/out if in only unit has failed.

Did you try another hazzard switch?
