Driveshafts

Best Answer tiger99 , 22 February 2014 - 05:09 PM

The rounded grooves, which are for the Rover tool for pulling the shaft out of the pot joint, not to be confused with any grooves for the rubber gaiters, are nearest to the outer end in every case.

The thick groove is indeed for a square section circlip 17H8597, which abuts the outer CV. It is very rare for it to be removed, in fact I have never needed to remove one from the shaft. It will not be easy to fit, but is very necessary. 37H8706 is the thin, circular section clip used at both ends to hold the shaft into the CV or pot.

At one time, competition shafts did not have the groove for 17H8597, which is a serious stress raiser, and instead had a welded-on collar. I don't know if these shafts are still available, or affordable. The high tensile shaft material has to be arc or MIG welded with low hydrogen electrodes under oil and water free conditions, or hydrogen embrittlement creates more of a problem than did the groove,

I've had to replace my drive shafts after my originals were destroyed in a house fire and annoyingly I can't use them as a reference. I've got some new ones in but I can't quite work out which end wants to go to the outer CV and which to the inner pot. Hopefully the picture has worked. One end is flared and has one groove for a circlip and the other is tapered and has one deep groove and one shallow groove. Cheers guys.

Flared end and circlip for inner pot joint, deep groove normally used to have a thicker split washer type fitting and is effectively the limit stop for the outer cv joint, small grove is again for thin circlip.

Have a look at this one, left side pot joint, right side cv joint

Adam if you do a google search on classic mini driveshafts about the fourth item is a set of images the 21st image shows two driveshafts on a reddish carpet with the inner pot ball races still attached but shows a clear view of the cv joint end with the larger washer/stop end and small circlip grove. Hope it helps.

Magic, cheers guys! Now I just need to track down a pair of the square section circlips. Mini Sport say you can't get hold of them any more, if anyone has a pair kicking about looking for a new home please let me know!

I have got the square section washers from Somerford but struggling to find a way to fit them, any ideas please. I bought a seconnd hand 7.5" disc set up including drive shafts & when stripped found one missing and one broken in its groove.
