Hi All, new here. Long time member of PH but now I have a mini in the family i thought I would join here!

 

So all 6ft5 of me has purchased a rally car project in need of some TLC. Started to strip the interior first to see what the corners of the floorpan are like...There seems to be some thick plastic coating on top of the floorpan and over the tunnel...what is this? Its hard black plastic about 2-3mm thick. I have googled what it could be but no luck in finding out. I wondered if its some sort of aftermarket reinforcement shell?

I think what you are describing is a thick bitumen like sound deadening/proofing material, it can be removed using a scrapper and possibly a hair drier to soften the more stubborn bits and seeing as it is going to be a rally car probably not needed and will get rid of some weight. Welcome to the forum.

Get a heat gun and scraper and it comes off easily enough. You will then need a load of white spirit and a log of blue roll or rags to get the residues off. Sound like a great project.

Wey hey...another 71 rally clubman....welcome! 

 

As Tamworthbay says above...heat gun will do the trick....saves a bit of weight, and stops moisture from sitting behind it too.  And if you are welding in the area that it is, it is better to get it out of the way anyway as it does burn!

Came across the exact same stuff and its a bitumen material. I put it all in a bucket and it weighed 2 1/2 stone ! Weight saved already!

Cheers gents, someone said it may have been that. I shall get some pics up soon. Its turning out to be a bit more of a 'project' than I had first thought, considering the money i paid for it too. Heart over head a bit, woops, but you gotta do these things! I don't mind adding some value to it, thats what i tell the girl. 

 

First up is welding a patch under the offside rear seat. Not that bad, but want to sort it before I get the new seat mounts and seats welded in. If any of you lurk ebay, yep, its that frog green one!

I removed that stuff from a rally Mini I built and weighed it. It came to almost 18 kg when added to the weight of the under-carpet soundproofing. That is the same as 4 gallons of petrol! Worth saving on a rally car.
