Hi Guys

I was wondering if you could help me out,

I have recently fitted a stage one kit to my 998cc mini but have not really seen any improvement, I am only getting about 65mph top speed and not amazing acceleration. I was thinking it would probably be something to do with timing or mixture? Any suggestions?

Once fitted, you need to get it tuned properly on a rolling road.

Did you change the needle in the carb? You need to fit an AAU needle as a starter

Hi Ross. Yes I did change the needle. Think it was to a AAU I changed it to. Do you think it is definitely the carb mixture? I can't afford to have it rolling road tuned at the moment but my friend can hopefully get it pretty good by ear. Do you know what I am looking out for if I check the mixture by ear?

I managed to get mine nice only tuned by ear, but I should imagine it would be 10 times better if I had it rolling roaded haha.

I can't really help on what to listen out for, I richened mine up a bit and tested, and there were no flat spots I could feel in the rev range, and it accelerated all the way through the speedo nicely, it was much better than before anyway haha.

You could always get hold of or buy a colour tune, which will help you out a lot

Hahah okay.

I have got a colour tune but it is very unreliable. I am thinking I may have the wrong needle. The one they sent with the kit was I think an aav needle?

You need to get it on a rolling road. Needles very rarely suit an engine perfectly. They usually need shaping to negate flat spots in the rev range.

65mph is very low. What did it do before? Do you know what the FDR(final drive ratio) is?

You need a rolling road really. For peace of mind though it may be worth doing a few other things as well. Firstly a good service, paying particular attention to the points and timing. Then I would also do a compression test just to be sure there aren't other issues before you spend any money out. As a comparison my city E 998 will do 95mph (indicated) and cruise happily at 75mph, but some of that is down to the standard E FDR.

Ohh okay thats impressive. I will check the timing and have a fiddle around with the mixture and see if I can get any better.

 I need to do mine now as well, I have fitted some a048Rs, from what I remember last time they caused the speedo to over read by about 10mph at 65. Could break the Ton!
