There is a hollow whurring sound which is coming from my mini, from sitting in the drivers seat it sounds as though it's coming from the front right hand side of the car, (left if you look at it head on from outside). Anyone know what this could be? Had a mate suggest it could be a ball joint but then again he wasn't sure as it was a weird noise haha  :shifty: Cheers for the replies  :D

i had a similar sound, tightned the castle nut up a bit with an air hammer and it stopped, started again 2 months later, replaced the bearing and all way well (Y)

Alternator bearing?

Mine makes a whirring noise, quite loud, you can hear it when driving at low'ish revs, still works fine, charges and keeps the battery at a good level.

There didn't seem to be much play, if any, in the alternator either when I had it off, which was weird.

When you think how many things there are that turn and could make a whirring noise at the front of a mini though, it could be a whole host of things, :D, just got to work through the rotating stuff and check it's okay.  I doubt it'd be a ball-joint, as that doesn't rotate, apart from when you turn the wheels, so couldn't make a whirring noise.

Is this noise when the car is moving?

If its while the car is stationary, but the engine is running I think we can rule out a wheel bearing!

If However it only does it when the car is moving then a wheel bearing is where I'd start investigating!

I'd also reccomend not driving the car until the problem is fixed!

A wheel bearing spinning in the hub is likely to cause damage, and a wheel bearing seizing could easily chuck you into on coming traffic or a ditch!

If you're replacing bearings I'd use timkin ones, and consider replacing both sides (they've both done the same number of miles)
