My 850 1979 Austin Morris has quite a rattle around the timing chain. I've not removed the cover yet, and was looking on Minispares for the tensioner so I can replace it but can't find one for an 850. Could those in the know tell me whether the 850 has a tensioner fitted please, and if so where I could purchase one ? Thanks in advance.

Probably no tensioner, but you can buy one and install one.

Will need another timing cover.

grtz!

It would be a '79 car! Up to '74 useless rubber ring fitted - '74 to '79 no tensioner and '79 onwards it used the same arrangement with the plakky pad - per the 998....

So ....it depends on when your engine was built......

Ok many thanks. I'll take off the cover and check first then.

The covers are different shapes so you shouldn't need to remove it to find out.

Thanks. Yes I realised this earlier when comparing it with my 1990 City E I'm restoring. They are both the same (late type covers) so I reckon my 79 will have a tensioner. I'll order a new tensioner pad and replace the worn one to see if it resolves the rattle. Thanks very much for your help chaps.

If your fitting a tensioner pad to cure a rattle, its false economy not to fit a new timing chain, you may silence it for a short while but it will return, trust me!

In more than one sense, it'll cost you mpg too.

I did wonder after looking at some past posts. I see you've given this advice before. Thank you for your guidance. I've added a new chain to my order.

Could I ask, for a standard 850 would it be beneficial to fit a duplex kit instead. I will still fit the new tensioner as I noted that aspect from your historical posts too.

Duplex doesn't use a tensioner. Chain is less likely to stretch.

Its not as black and white as Duplex does not use one, and single row chain does use a tensioner, I always use a tensioner and so do respected tuners including our own specialist AC Dodd. Some say it fails but none have done on mine even though it runs centre of the duplex. Duplex chains eventually stretch.

That's really interesting .. never heard of that setup. Does it make any difference?

Yes more accurate cam/ignition timing and longer service between chain replacement
