Last time I worked on a Mini engine was over 10 years ago; I always used Red Hermatite gasket sealant as it was what the local Motor Factors sold. Previous to that I used Blue Hylomar.

As it's been so long since I worked on an engine, what do you wonderful Mini people use today? Is it still much the same as it was i.e. use whatever works for you or is there a "Top Choice" that's more suited to the A-Series?

I would appreciate your input, especially from those who build engines a lot.

PS Nothing space-age and/or super-expensive please!! :D

Still use Blue Hylomar from Motor factors or internet
More modern gearbox side covers have no gaskets, then need to use Silcone RTV (e.g. Loctite 5910 from Halfords)

Others say nothing other than the gasket, some say grease on the gasket
Definitely avoid Silicone on sump to engine, or you end up with it in the sump and possible blockage of oil strainer
