ok i have to ask this as i have been wondering for ages.

i have got a few standard, late, 998 heads kicking around the garage, and i had a look at a 12g202 at a friends place the other week, and although i didnt have them side by side, they dont look that different to me?

i had a 12g295 a few years back that i fitted to one of my 998 engines, the chambers looked a much better, more opened out shape on that and the ports (admitedly they had been worked a little) looked much more purposefull.

so my question is, what are the advantages of the 12g202 over the standard 998 head in my metro?

is it just that its cast differently allowingthe chambers to be opened up, yet still be able to machine the face back to get the C.R right again without breaking into the water gallery? as i understand it, thats what happens when you try to modify a standard 998 head. am i right? is that all it is?

I would message Cooperman, although he's not an established engine builder, he's been around since mini's have been on the road and knows his stuff.

The 202 has a square form intake port and a slightly larger intake valve. Basically it's not that special. However, because it has near ideal runners, it's a head modifiers favourite as it requires less work than a 998 head to get optimum results. The 998 head can work even better because there is more material present to get the best internal shapes for optimum road performance. However the 998 head requires more material to be removed to get to this point. There as time is money, this costs more.

There is some good info/research on Graham Russel's site. As AC says, they have more metal on them than the 12G295 so you can get a better flow path. Large ports don't always mean better flow, as they can be at the wrong/poor angle to flow properly

Here is one on small bore heads:

If you read through his recent 68mm build he is getting great numbers (100hp and 100ft/lbs) from a mildly modified 12G202

I've been collecting them, as everyone ways saying how "rare" they are. I think I have 4 or 5 at the moment!
