Hi there, I am just coming up to getting my 1963 mini on the road and with reguards to running the engine in, I have to drive 500 miles at 30 mph. My question is, roughly what rpm is the engine doing at 30mph?
The car is the basic 848cc super deluxe engine with standard gearbox.

Many thanks, Tom.

There is no set rule to running an engine in,

Some people just say careful driving increasing the revs every couple hundred miles

Or...

Just drive it normally/spirited

Up to you both are proven

just curious who said 30mph ?

seems a bit low & may load the engine a bit too much - which you don't want when running in

more important to vary the revs , & keep the load light & light on the throttle

I would say more like 50 mph (in top)

just drive normally. Don't thrash it, and don't drive too gently. More important is that you are not running rich in any way,
so the rings bed in properly.

These are the running instructions from the 1963 Austin Mini Handbook

Running-in Speeds

The treatment given to a new vehicle will have an important bearing on its subsequent life, and engine speeds during this early period must be limited. The following instructions should be strictly adhered to.

During the first 500 miles (800km)

DO NOT exceed 45mph (72kph).

DO NOT drive at full throttle in any gear.

DO NOT allow the engine to labour in any gear.

Also I would advise re-torqueing your head down after a couple of hundred miles and change the oil and filter after you have run the engine in.

Good advice to run it on a light throttle at all times, revs wont hurt it as long as you don't rev it too much, better to use more revs than normal on a light throttle than low revs with your foot down.

Also frequent short journeys are better for running in than say doing 500 miles all at once

Ok great, thanks for the info. I will run the car normally but being very careful, and to re torque the head after a few hundred miles.

Thanks again, Tom.

I'd do the same, just a bit of mechanical sympathy - moderate the revs and don't let it lug. It's not only the rings and bores that you are running in.

Quite funny,as running in a camshaft needs 2000-2500 rpm..
