I think it would be very helpful if you would post a picture of your distributor with the dizzy cap removed. If you cannot post a picture, perhaps you can find something online that looks similar (again with the cap removed) so we can see the wires.
In general, 3-wire devices are not like the AccuSpark, BritParts, Ignitor type modules which use 2 wires. The 3-wire devices are traditionally units that use an external amplifier. The wires coming out do not connect directly to power. They typically receive power from their control box on two wires and then return an output signal on the 3rd wire to a switching device inside the remote amplifier.

Your reference to a cross and the presence of 3 wires sounds more and more like you may have a Lumenition or Crane/Alison ignition fitted to that distributor. Take a look at the two pictures below. Neither one is likely to be an exact match to what you have but do they look "similar"? The pictures below are NOT Mini distributors so don't focus on that. Just look at the general appearance of the components.

If it is like the one you identified then you need the electronic remote module which the trigger head connect to, I have my old Piranha Electronic Ignition in the workshop which is the same design and principle

If it is Lumenition, you've got to make sure to get the right box too, they've got an old one and a new one, I seem to remember you tell the difference by the colour of the plug on the box, (red or white), but I can't remember which is which, , I seem to remember that some of the 'eyes' (the bit in the dizzy) weren't compatible with one of the boxes, so a little investigation and research will probably be required.
It's a Lumenition Optronic kit.
