What needle should I have for this setup?

1984 998

HiF38 Carb

Maniflow Manifold

Maniflow Full single  exit system

Rebuilt to high compression 1000cc

K&N Cone filter

Electronic Aldon ingnition / distributer (without a vacuum advance)

I think Metro inlet manifold

Electronic fuel pump set to 2.5psi

Previous owner said something about head work but wasnt 100% sure on what was done

Thanks

AAA is a 1275 needle so possible a bit rich for a small bore engine, you seem to be running the standard cam from your spec. here are some popular needles ABY might be nearer what you need

ADE

998cc, HIF38, Metro inlet, std filter, free flow exhaust

ABY

998cc, 12G295 head, HIF-38, Stub Stack, K&N, 3 into 1, RC 40, std cam

AAU

1100cc, 1.5in SU, 3into1, heated inlet, RC40, K&N

AAA

1275cc, HIF38, 9.5:1CR, conical filter

Going by the code on the Aldon dizzy and the aldon site the engine could have Piper 270/285 or Kent 266/276 / 286 cams fitted...

Yes it is from around position 5 on the needle, the AAA for the 1275 is only a std engine with a conical filter, where as the spec of the 998 listed has a better exhaust + other mods, as with all needle charts there only a guide and lots require a custom needle to suit.

Thats the learning curve on needles and you have to try what works or modify as required

In most cases the AAA needle is too rich for a st1 998 mini. I find an ABD needle a good starting point, this then needing some custom tweaking to dial it in. Most engines need a custom needle to get the best from them.

I looked at ABD but it seemed near the same as AAU which people said was for stock airbox with k&n element and too lean for a cone filter

Yup the AAU can also be used. It too will need mods.
