Hi All.

I just welded my new front on yesterday, and are now almost ready to put the engine back in. But In my engine bay there is some kind of foam, which is up in the top against the cabin. Is'nt this just collecting a lot of dirt and moist? I'm thinking of removing it, but i'm not sure if it's ok.

The picture below is not taken for this purpose, but just one i found which i took earlier, but should show what i mean.

It's a foam type insulation, supposedly to reduce noise, some people like it, some don't . You can get a replacement if you don't like the look of a bare bulk head.

It doesn't really do a lot for soundproofing anyway, the insulation on the inner side of the bulkhead is much more effective at that. I'd remove it because it absorbs moisture and any rain water that gets into the engine bay, which in turn corrodes the back of your fuse box.

I took mine out. Makes the engine bay look a lot better and I didn't notice any additional noise! The only bit which was fiddly I think was the fuse box, as I had to take that out. But at least it's not rusting behind it anymore.

Thank you very much. It will be the first thing i do tomorrow. Should be easy with the motor out. Noise shouldn't be any problem, because my front exhaust has been broken since i bought it, and have bought a replacement. So noise will be less anyway :)

I have been lurking a lot in here, and are planning to make a build thread. Great forum for a newbie like me!

Asbestos in sound isolation?? Never heard of that one.. doesn't even need to withstand high heat...

Surely no asbestos in an 80s/90s car? I think it's just spongey foam.

Clutch and brakes can contain it..also headgaskets.
Sound proofing is a plastc spayed with a 'anti rain coating'

Not here in the UK here anymore brake linings, clutches, and in gaskets. The use of asbestos in these components was prohibited from 1999

Hence why i said "not sure"  ;D  going off the thought most other things in the engine bay did contain some.
