Engine Build

Best Answer BritishRacingGreen , 02 March 2014 - 12:20 PM

White smoke at start up is normal. If the engine was burning oil you would definitely notice it. I had an engine rebuilt that was using around a quarter of a litre an hour and it looked like i had a blue smoke machine in the exhaust.

I'd carry on for a week or so now the leaks are fixed, keep an eye on the oil level, but it all should be fine if the oil level stops dropping.

Hello I have recently had an engine fully re-built! Does anyone know how many miles It actually takes for the rings to 'bed' in I've heard different numbers and don't know many miles it could possibly burn oil for
Thanks your help would be appreciated

depends on the engine, but the most critical part is the initial start, and first 50-100 miles of running. On first start the cam should be bedded in by running at 2000rpm, don't let the engine idle. Then take it for a good 25-50 mile run on some local back roads, what your looking to do here is put the engine under load. Accelerate through the gears between 2-4krpm, not at what but enough so that you can hear and feel the engine loading. Try not to heavily brake and where possible only use engine braking. Throughout this again, try not to let the engine idle. Once you have done that do an oil change. Then the engine will be MOSTLY bedded in, though the process can continue for a thousand miles or so the majority will be done in the first 100 miles. Just make sure to avoid revving the nuts off it and keep it under load and it will bed in nicely.

Where are you in the running in process now?

I'm currently around 700/800mile mark
I didn't do the initial start up the builders did it as they fitted it

It's not a standard mini 998 it's 0.020 flattop pistons and high-lift 266 kent cam

It doesn't smoke on tick over
And the white smoke is when it's on full choke on start up which is condensation I'm guessing as it's cold nights and water sits in the pipes Etc
And is gonna be rich cause of the extra fuel
Choke goes off after about 3-4mkns of starting and ticks over at 1000-1100 rpm with no trouble
The builders said they did 70-80 mile run in
I was told to 'drive it normally' after 500
Mile
But to not go over 5000rpm or labour the engine going up hills and keep it revving freely
And it went on the rolling road last week to have a new carb set up
Don't know if is just me worrying over nothing
The oil it currently between min and max
Hasn't dropped since yesterday
So I'm guessing it may have lost oil when the leaks where fixed
