On removing a push rod, the cam follower seems to have vanished inside the engine.

I'm panicking as I dont know how to fix it and i need the car working asap.

Any help is fantastic.

Is it a 1275 unit or a 998? if its the latter then you can remove the follower cover panel round the back to investigate, if not then I dont know the easiest way to extract the follower to be honest

998? 1275?

In a 998 the tappet covers can be taken off, you'll see the follower loose and will be able to put it back in the slot. Will probably need to remove the exhaust to access it.

In a 1275 the only way the tappets can come out is out the bottom, which would require the absence of a cam.

So i'm assuming you have a 998 - take the manifold nuts off the back of the head, remove the inlet and exhaust, undo the single 1/2 inch AF bolt that retains the tappet cover.

If the cams in place they can't drop down into the engine, unless it's broken into bits that is, if it's a 998 you can remove the tappet cover on the rear of the engine and have a look.

Yeah its a 998. I dont understand how its happened. It over heated the other day so i was taking the head off to do the gasket, which strangely had no holes in despite there being exhaust gas in the coolant....
But anyway, i went to put the pushrods back in, one wouldnt go in all the way, so i pulled it out, put it back in and it kept going

With a 998 the oil 'stiction' at the bottom of the push rod can lift a follower out of its guide. it is sometimes possible to 'fiddle' the follower back into its hole with a push rod, but you'll probably end up taking a can chest cover off. It's a simple and reasonably easy job, so don't despair.

Here's hoping its sitting happily under the tappet chest cover on can just be popped back in place....... - it's got to be in there somewhere.!!!

If you're mightily dextrous with the odd busted inset ring spanner the tappet chest cover can be taken off without removing the manifold - just..... grab a little one and engage in forced child labour....

Maybe try using a magnetic pickup tool first. Especially if the cylinder head is off.

I tried a magnet with no luck. The manifold is pushed back already with the head being off, so i'll try the cover tomorrow :) thanks guys

Oh well easy job then, as others say tappet cover off, one bolt, just remember to fit a new gasket and bolt seal. Good luck.
Wisdom with hind sight, I always 'unstick' the push rod by twisting and sort of rattling to ensure the cam followers stay in place, before pulling up the push rod.

I'm going to get a chance to look tomorrow and it dawned on me, i dont actually know what im looking at when i get behind the cover...

Does anyone have a detailed description of how to put the follower back in place or even a photo of what i will find behind the cover?

Thanks again guys

the follower wont be in its position and you can just put it back in its disignated, place,

don`t overthink it, its very simple. when you have taken the cover off it will explain itself

So its literally a 30 second job? No hidden demons like "if you use your left hand with your right knee pointing south and the cats playing poker with madonna, then your engines gonna fall out"?
