Hi everyone, basically I need to replace the head gasket on my '91 Rover Mini Cooper 1275 and cannot seem to find the stage 1 and stage 2 torque settings for the cylinder head nuts and bolts, anyone have an idea?

It seems to me that "Stage 1" and "Stage 2" torque settings, often also involving an angle, are for a K series or other modern engine, as there is generally only a single torque given for an A series.

That is not to say that you should tighten them up in cowboy manner, each nut, one at a time to the full 40 lbft or whatever, but rather, nip them all up, then in as many stages as you wish, say to 15 lbft, then 30, etc. You probably do that with other things too, such as wheel nuts, without even thinking about it. It is just plain common sense to go slowly and evenly.

I always do mine to 25 lb.ft, then 35 lb.ft., then 40 lb.ft.

Run the engine through 2 or 3 full heat-up cycles and re-torque by backing off each nut in turn and in the correct sequence by 1/2 a turn, then re-torqueing to 40 lb.ft.
