Yeah, it's a SOHC.  I'm starting to wonder if it's worth the hassle :-/   I'll take it all off before I scrap the car and mull it over.

I can't see as you would gain anything except the fun of doing it and the what the hell is that? Reaction when people see the engine.

I know Clive, the head does look good  so it'd be novel if nothing else, not much gain for a loss of 'authenticity', like I said, I'll ruminate on it :-)

Unless its a side valve, which Avnet been aroung for 50 years, it can be both OHC (over head cam) and OHV (over head valve) as long as the cam for the punto isn't in the block you're ok. A single over head cam can also be 16v. It's not impossible to make a 8v aseries perform as well as a 16v engine but it takes a lot of valve work.

Also the punto will probably be cross flow which will give you better cam choices.

just checked,

 

all punto's were OHC, in the uk at least.

 

the 1.1-1.2 8v casting is similarish in performance capability to the 12g940, for example, about 60hp,for the base 1.2 model and 75 hp for the punto 75 which has a hotter cam profile.

 

I'd expect with a decent exhaust, ITB's and a 1380 bottom end you's see about 85 hp on a std punto 75 head.
