Just throwing a question out there....but i also realise everyone has their own opinion and driving style, but I don't want a cam that you have to rev the nuts off the engine to get things going.

Been recommended a Kent MD266 or MD276.

Also read very good things about Swiftune's SW05 and SW10 cams.

The car is mostly used for road rallying and only considering a cam change due to the engine being out and thought why not.

Engine - 1380cc, Big (ish) valve ported head, twin HS4's.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

With a similar engine spec I run an SW5-07. Loads of torque to pull you out of anything in the lanes where you might get caught in the wrong gear and not too cammy to bog down on special tests.

I went to this cam from a Calvert Re13 and lost 2bhp, gained torque (and lower down) and the car was much more drive able in all situations.

Cheers GraemeC....exactly the kind of first hand experience I wanted to hear and by the sounds of it, the sort of driving style I have (wrong gear!!!!).

Would be good if someone with experience of a 266 (similar cam i think) can wade in with a counter arguement.

When I built a 1990 Cooper 1275 for Endurance Rallying I used a new MG Metro cam. I then blueprinted the engine and 'nicely finished' the engine parts, if you know what I mean. It gave 84 bhp at 5700 and with a 3.44 FDR and a standard gearbox it was competitive, but hard work against modern 1400 cc cars.

Rallying is not about 1 or 2 bhp, it is about carrying the speed through the corners, driving accurately, quickly and neatly and always going the right way.

For historic road rallies the 266/MG Metro cam will be fine, but it might be worth going to the 276 for rallies with higher speed tests. For special stage rallies a 286 is ideal.

Do you have a link to A C Dodd website? Can't seem to find anything.
Thanks.

There is no 'magic' cam for rallying.

Whichever cam you fit there will be times when you wish you had more power, or more torque, or the power at a different rpm figure.

On a long tarmac straight out of a square corner, you might wish you had a 296, but on a twisty and wet tight little road with some mud or gravel you might pray for a 266 or equivalent.

For racing it is, of course, entirely different as a couple of extra bhp will improve the lap time by a tenth of a second or better. That is important. In rallying it is entirely different. For tarmac stages I think a 286 is hard to beat, but for gravel/ice/mud a 276 or even a 266 is better.

Yes, there are other cams all of which are claimed, by those selling them of course, to be a huge improvement over the existing available range, but after over 60 years of cam design further improvements for the A-series is probably just 'turd polishing'.

I was involved in a group test for Mini Mag a few years ago where 9 rally Minis were all tested. Each of us drove several cars. Fastest in a straight line was a 1293 'S' with a 649 cam, 40 DCOE Weber and an LSD. However, it was very slow on the twisty handling test where my car with twin H4's and a 286 was fastest on the dry tarmac. On a little autotest type course there a Mini with a 510 'S' cam came out best.

I always stick with Kent cams because their range is wide and well-established for competition.

I did a rally in my 1310 cc 'S' with its 286 cam and it was snowy. The whole thing was horrendous. I couldn't get the car to go as it needed over 3000 rpm to get it moving and that just spun the wheels. How I wished for a standard 'S' cam at that time.

Really depends on engine size and cylinder head, usually the 276 is too poor at bottom end if you do a forest test or gravel making easier to loose time and make errors.

I used to run a 285/2 back in the day. I was well happy with it
