Hi all

Engine: 1275 A series

Head: Minisport stage 2

Rockers: 1;5;1 roller

Cam; Swiftune sw5 duplex kit.

Also other work done -  New rings, shells, followers, big end bearing, clutch plate, oil pump and filter, fan belt - breathers cleaned up fully -

The guidance from swiftune is:

1) Equal the height of the cam and crank gears with a straight edge.

2) A+ Timing cover needs dent at the back of the cover knocked out to avoid the chain.

3) the two 1/4 UNF Bolts to the main cap will need to be replaced with the ones provided, countersink the plate for this,

4) Vernier allen bolts torque 12ft/lbs

5) Tappets set to 0.015 thou

6) Timing set from 106-108 degrees full lift #1 inlet.

7) double valve springs (bought with cam kit -  F/L 1.380)

All these were ticked off by the chaps who built the engine / set the cam.

The cam was set by a fellow in bromsgrove recommended by Nick Swift himself who was kind enough to offer me that contact and the engine was rebuilt by a guy who really knows his onions in terms of engine building - so im happy with the people who did the work.

My Tuning chaps retarded my timing by a few degrees to make it "safe" for a few hundred miles whilst i run it in and have said to bring it back in a few weeks and they will set it up perfectly on the rolling road.

Ive driven it like a saint for a week but ive noticed a couple of things.

From the first time i drove it,The engine sounds much "gruffer" than before, much meatier - especially the exhaust and it seems to get quite hot to the touch on the rocker cover.

I have not found any airlocks or leaks anywhere and to be honest - its drives well, just sounds like a trombone is fitted to the exhaust.although on one occasion the engine followed on for 5 seconds after i took the key out.?>?

It sounds very tappetty too under torque in say 3rd or 4th gear at a medium speed up a hill, maybe this is the retardation of the timing is the reason and this will change when i get it tuned back the other way.

Hopefully there are some experts on this set up that can offer advice or reassurance.

Thanks

The only concern here seems to be sounds tapetty under torque. This indicates pinking under load. Usually associated with too much compression and /or too much ignition advance. Have you not enquired with the engine builder? I would want to know this straight away if it were one of my engines!

Take it back to the chap who built it if you've any concerns?

You may have a distributor which is advancing too rapidly for the new engine spec. If the advance curve is incorrect and the advance comes on too early, the engine can 'pink' at mid range under load despite being about right at  static setting, or even slightly retarded. What compression ratio do you have?

I've not worked with an SW5 cam, but it is worth asking which distributor you need for that cam and compression ratio.

Looks like a too aggressive advance curve is fitted.

Dont put load on this engine until you get it tuned again, or you may damage a piston.

Having read this I agree, what distributor are your running? if standard then its curve will not match the new engine spec, also if you dont run optimum ignition timing and retard it then you increase the heat, the problem is when your guy advances up the timing its going to make matters worse.

Re-curving won't fix too much compression.
