Hi All. It's time for me to decide how to drive the camshaft on my Mini. It's a full group-A  MPI Cooper. The target is to get the best performance possible(together with the ultimate reliability). What should I consider?

A: GEAR DRIVE;

B. VERNIER DUPLEX(either all alloy or steel/alloy);

C: BELT KIT.

Reliability v Cost v Performance is a Standard Duplex with tensioner in my opinion, and tensioners are used by some of the best engine builders on the duplex including AC here on TMF

So, from this, if you were changing to an adjustable duplex system you wouldn't need the tensioner?

Well a chain only needs replacing once in a blue moon, whereas a belt needs replacing more often. So you're kind of creating a solution to a problem that never existed..

If it was me, I'd just stick with the duplex. More simple, and it is proven to be reliable. No one really knows for sure whether to fit a tensioner in this situation. You just have to look at the facts, and make your own decision. Some people do, and some people don't.

Standard duplex timing gear/chain, no tensioner, and offset keys (as needed) to set the valve timing.

Tensioner will be ok on a duplex and you wont be getting chain rattle when it stretches which duplex still do.
