What's the best method of cleaning up the shell on carbs? Mine has black deposit build up, what solvents are best or is it a case of wire brush in a drill etc

Even soaking overnight in water with a dishwasher tab in helps no end. Then wd40 and scotchbrite (or plain old scouring pad if you haven't got any) will clean it up a treat.

I used petrol and a toothbrush (specifically for the job, mind you, not straight from the bathroom...)

As above dishwashers are great, or any strong solvent. You can get small ultrasonic jewellery cleaners from various from places like Axminster tools fairly cheaply and they work amazingly well.

Another cleaning option for carbs is to use Morrisons 'Savers' Biological Laundry Liquid.

Also works well on dirty K&N filters...
