Hi,

I have a 1987 Mini Mayfair 998cc Automatic. Since I bought it the car only gave me one problem but I took it to the mechanic and it fixed (water pump change and complete car service done). Now my problem is that yesterday when I drive back from work about 20 kms I stop in a red light and after a couples of minutes the car start like getting a rough idle droping some rpm but as soon I accelerate it I came back to normality, but once I arrive home I stop the car with the engine running for about 5 min and the same happen but this time the car engine stop, so I have to start the engine again and accelerate to avoid stall.

Then I open the bonnet to see if is a problem and the only thing I saw was when I accelerate the car abour 2000 or 2500 rpm some grey/white smoke came from behind the engine and also from under the car around the exhaust pipes before the catalytic converter. I have no idea what could be wrong with the car, the temperature of the car was good all the time, also the coolant and oil was in normal levels.

I hope you can help me with this.

thanks in advance.

Get it checked out right away.. White smoke from exhaust means it is a gas mixture problem, most of the time.

probably your fuel pump fills the sump with fuel because of a broken fuel pump diaphragm  or the carb is overfilling the engine with fuel because of massive air leak on the choke lever if an HIF carb or the float chamber level is incorrect!

Before jumping up and down about everything it could be, my advice would be to try and identify where the grey / white smoke is coming from, it could be something as simple as a breather hose split which would also account for the rough idle and stalling. Have a good look around th back of the engine and check visually for anything loose/split, and report back
