Best advice is never to buy a roll cage unless you are intending on using your car for proper competition.

If you are, then it has to be an FIA Approved one and carry a sticker to that effect.

Best cages are from Safety Devices - they fit properly.

Thanks, I'm not going to be racing, its for a roiad car with a c16xe conversion. I thought i should add a bit more protection as I'm fitting the bigger engine.

I would be wary of a cage that hasn't been properly tested, in a crash it could do more harm than good. Safety devices ones come on here from time to time at sensible money. I have a full weld in one sat ready for our work project and they are superbly designed.

run head first into some scaffolding and see how you come off, i know it's a lot slower speed than a car but you will get the idea

What he said. A roll cage without a proper 5-6 point harness is really just like installing a guy with a sledgehammer behind your head.

Ok I just though a mini with a cage fitted would be safer in a crash than one without. Is the consensus that the possibility of a head injury is too great for a road car?

Cheers

Yes, it is not advisable unless you are wearing a crash helmet & have full harness belts and properly installed competition seats.

Of course, on rallies there are road sections where helmets are not worn, but these are at a lower average speed and full harness belts and proper cage padding to FIA requirements helps.

Some insurers don't like cages on road cars as they might be an indication that the driver intends to drive on the public roads as though he expects to need roll over protection! So the risk perception, especially to 3rd parties, is increased. Logical maybe.

I have a full fia 6point cage in my road car, I don't get the train why this would be an issue? I'm 6'2" and only ever clobber my head when I have a helmet on for on track so there's no need to go running into scaffolding bars (odd idea)

If it's for a road car and you like the look of it then go for it, after all running cars is all personal preference. I wouldn't put a non aseries engine in a mini but me saying that would stop you would it.

With standard seatbelts and no helmet you ll break your head like an egg against the rollecage in the event of a crash .
