Basically is wrapping the exhaust a good idea or bad. Im fed up of seeing the unsightly rust on the manifold.

It can increase the corrosion of mild steel manifolds due to holding moisture. If you're not to bothered about your manifold having a decreased lifespan then there's no other issues really.

Phil.

I see it as a temporary "get you home" type fix, not to keep it on there.

I think he is talking about the Kevlar heat resistant manifold wrap rather than the 'holts exhaust repair bandage' type wrap.

Could be worth having it Ceramic Coated if its within your budget.

I would get it coated with a proper coating like a ceramic, Wrapping manifolds is good for motorsport or high performance applications where the engine is regularly looked at and checked over but not so much for a near standard road car.

It is good at keeping under bonnet temperatures down, however it doesn't get rid of that heat, it just means the heat is transferred down the exhaust further, as a result it can cause the rest of the exhaust to be damaged (cracking welds etc). As also stated it can hold water which isnt good for the manifold beneath, on a car thats used a lot it isnt much of an issue as it will evaporate off when the engines run, but if its not used much then the water can linger and rust out the manifold.

The manifold will also produce a fair amount of smoke when new and when its wet which isnt good for peace of mind (can look like something is on fire)
