Hi I am after a (HVLP?) spray gun for priming my mini. I understand I need a wide nozzles around 2mm - please correct me if I am wrong. I have a 3HP, 14cfm, 90ltr air compressor with a 10 mm bore air line.

Can anyone recommend a decent, but not major expensive spray gun?

Also, do I need to use a water trap in the air line?

Many thanks.

the Star range of guns get good reviews for a lower price range gun. I bought a Star S106. ($106 australian). I'll buy a second one with a 1.4mm tip. Just the tip costs $85 so it's worth buying a whole second gun!

These days you want gravity fed. Generally 1.6-1.8mm tip for primers, but read your product TDS. The TDS will tell you everything you need to know. Pressure at gun, nozzle size etc. Probably 1.4mm for top coats/base/clears. But again, read the TDS.

The most important thing you can do is read the product TDS.

And yes you will need a water trap. I run a large one at the compressor, problem is the air cools along the length of the line, causing condesation, which while the air was warm and dry at the first water trap, at the gun it will be cool and moist again, so run a second water/oil remover at the gun. You should also run a regulator at the gun so you can allow for pressure drop along the length of the line.

Oh, don't forget, read the TDS!

I bought a kestral from sprayguns direct, works fine for the cost and pretty well built.
I use a filter regulator with water trap as well as drop legs in the line, have a coalescing filter as well when painting and to be sure have a small water trap mounted on the gun, it's a small one made by devilbiss.
