Evening TMF,

Searching through racing mini photos, I've come across a few Mini's with boxes on the bonnet or holes cut in the bonnet/slam panel for carbs. I assume these arn't A series engine. Anyone she'd some light on these?

Yes they are A-series based, the block and gearboxes are anyway!.

The carbs are most likely Webers and the heads could be either the 8-port varient like you see here: http://www.minispare...heads.aspx|Back to shop

Or something along the lines of a K1100 BMW motor bike head conversion that some companies offer in kit form.

I'd say the second photo is a bonnet for a kad16v motor

I think the estate in the 2nd pic has the KAD twin cam engine. Certainly has their bonnet with the "hump" near the rad.

I'm pretty sure the middle/second picture is of my friends car, and although it has a KAD bonnet it's an 8-port underneath it.

Sadly the car is "retired" awaiting restoration but the engine is now in a MK1 Mini with a more subtle bonnet.  You'd hardly know unless you look closely !!

Phil.

Have the photos disappeared?

I'm pretty sure one of them was this one (it's for sale now):

  • 1380 motor, brand new bottom end $4500.00 has done 1500 km
  • Ken elder (Aussie made)  alloy cross flow head running twin 40mm webers
  • Full coil over adjustable spax suspension, full adjustable control arms.
  • Stainless exhaust,7×13 mini lites tyres as new, as new cooper brakes all round, all steel custom bonnet, custom into, car has been fully deseamed (properly),rotisserie built, and is also fully engineered

Thanks for that Tim! Very useful!

Thanks everyone else for you input too. Another question now-

Why do they mount the carbs at the front of the engine? As oppose to standard when the carbs are by the bulkhead.

It makes the head a "crossflow" design, where the fuel and air go in one direction and don't have to turn around like in the usual a-series head.

Because 8-Port heads are usually crossflow with the four exhaust ports on one side and the four inlet ports (carbs/injection) on the other side.

The A-Series head has a 'siamesed' design where 5 ports (3 exhaust / 2 inlet) are shared on one side of the head for the four cylinders which is less efficient and restricts ultimate power.

AKM 7 Port with twin DCOE 38's (and it all fits under a standard bonnet)!
