See Attached image (Sorry best I had)....... the oil temperature guage.

This goes from 50 - 170, it moves from just below 50 to around 51, maybe even 52 on mine. Does this mean something or is this as I suspect a pointless dial purely there to make up the number of dials, and if so why did rover not put on a useful dial such as oil pressure.
Just something that makes me giggle every time I look ay my dash :P

I was told that If they fitted an oil pressure gauge people would complain about fluctuating oil pressure..

Never mind, I thought it was an oil pressure gauge haha

Oil temp is a bit pointless on a daily car

Oil temp should reach about 80-90 degrees centigrade as an operating temperature

Ross, I know oil pressure gauges are good and I wish I had one, this is an oil temperature gauge.

And when I start him up, its at just beneath 50, then after about 20 mins of driving it gets to 52, and stays there. the top of the dial is 170 yet 52 is all it ever reads no matter of how warm the water temp gauge is, how hard I drive, nothing will change the oil temp. :P

Yes thaths why they dont fit too much gauges today, and what they put is controlled by the ecu, better not to give too much informations to the average driver.

These rover gauges dont work anyway, there just cosmetic.

I think the ECU uses the oil temperature sensor to determine fuelling too but don't quote me on that one as I may be wrong

In a way that's a relief as I have just bought a 98 Cooper with the same oil temp gauge and it to only rises to 51 ish, as car is new to me I was going to check out the oil temp sensor and the gauge or possibly change to an oil pressure gauge. So the fact that someone else's is useless as well, sorry, gives me some comfort.

No, the sender is only fitted to cars that have the gauge.

Most gauges (if any are fitted) on modern cars are 'dumbed down' or removed completely so as not to alarm the modern driver !

A good example is the R50 New MINI which unlike many cars today still has a water/coolant temperature gauge but which is programmed to rise quickly to normal and stay there on 'N' over a very wide range of temperatures without fluctuating. If you 'hack in' to the ECU you can read the real widely varying temperatures in digtial readout in centigrade.......
