I started a thread about this a while ago, and the general consensus was that you shouldn't bother. However, with all the grit I can see at the bottom of the casing, I'm going to try something. But I'm not sure what yet.

Couple of liters of paraffin or kerosine / pump diesel and a stiff brush, then clean the outside of the case off with wonder wheels.

Then rinse everything out inside with clean paraffin or kerosine / pump diesel again.

Don't be tempted to use petrol ever - my Dad nearly killed himself after washing motorbike parts out in a basin of petrol that exploded when the fluorescent lamp flickered and ignited the vapors.  It took six months for the just the skin to heal and I can still smell burning flesh nearly 40 years later.
