Advice needed please - a photo would be even better!

Car is a '62 Mk.1    The left hand 5.5 gallon tank (which may not be original) has a recessed diagonal where a metal strap probably secured the tank to the body.  I also have another tank without the recess but would prefer not to use that one.  I do have various metal straps including two with a tightening bolt between them.

It looks as though the top strap may have been secured underneath the parcel shelf.  There is no mounting point for the lower strap because the boot floor is new.

Question is:  Should there be a mounting or attachment fitting for the lower strap or was it just bolted through the floor?  Or have I got it completely wrong.......

Thanks all.

Bob

It should be the vertical 2 piece strap running from the boot floor to the rear bulkhead.  North American Spec had the upper strap fixed to the parcel shelf with a large reinforcing bracket (and even that may have been later than this car) but everywhere else had it bolted to the bulkhead.  It should be the tank without the recess really, I'm not sure if the later tank with the recess will fit properly and strap properly because I have a feeling they ditched the tank shoe from the shell when they changed the strap arrangement and the later tanks just sit straight on the floor.  Do you have a photo of how its fitted now?

Thanks Dan,

The present set-up has two straps (with adjusting bolt) bolted to the rear bulkhead and boot floor, running inside the tank flange.  It just doesn't look right!

Certainly it fits like that but there is nothing to stop the tank sliding inwards with the fuel filler pipe gradually working its way through the rubber seal.  I can see how using the diagonal straps would pull the tank outwards and stop that from happening.

Put a bit of thin foam (toolbox drawer foam is what Ive used on mine) and it grips it far better and stops it sliding out.  Not needed but gives you extra piece of mind.

Thanks for that.
